Open Hearts, Open Minds, Open Doors:
the People of The United Methodist Church

Pastor’s Column:

How does one begin to say good bye? By being gracious and humble and thanking God for the opportunity of being your pastor the past two years. Veronica and I love you and will miss you. This is and has been a wonderful assignment!

Being Doug’s wingman and co-pilot has been a joy. I’ve had his back and he has had mine. I will miss my buddy. Who would have thought an old anchor cranker (Marine) and a mudslogger (Army) would get along so well. God knew. Doug and Martha have opened their arms and hearts to Veronica and me from the very beginning. Thank both of you.

I thank God for the wonderful leadership I have found at this church. From the L-Team, to the music departments (Jan, Ellen, Diane and Susan T.), from the kitchen (Voted #1 for the best lemonade, coffee and cookies, by this pastor.), to the clothes closet, Hope Center, and the Table, and from the committees to the people in the pews ... this church is so blessed with talent. The young adults, youth and parents have also touched my life. The hugs, smiles, handshakes and laughter we have shared have all lifted my heart, and I see a bright future for this church and the world. The Grape Express will chug on down the track and bring God’s love to others along the way. I have certainly enjoyed the ride. I hate to get off at the next stop, Vicki. (sigh) Most of all, I thank Dianne in the office for her smile and wisdom. She is a real blessing to Doug, myself and this church.

I will take the love you have given to Veronica and I to the Vallejo First UMC, share God’s love there and continue this journey with them. I am excited and sad at the same time. This time has passed too soon. Yet, the journey continues. “The Good Lord willing and the creek don’t rise, I’ll see you again.” Amen.

Until we meet again,

Shalom. Roger

Builders and the New Addition Lunch Break

It's lunch break time so come join us at noon, Saturday, June 12, at Gary and Kay Neal's for a patio potluck provided by the New Addition Builders. You may want to keep your hard hats on or a sunhat if you prefer. We already have a few new folks  added to the payroll and I am sure when you find out that Vic and Patty, Margaret and Bill, and  Barbara B. have signed on, you'll know the quality of the crew. Sandy and Doug have been pulled off temporarily to another job site but will catch us later. Fellowship Hall is buzzing with who's going to be hired on next. We have room for all but want you to be in on the ground floor remodel. Check with the subs or the self- appointed contractor, Kay Neal, to get your name on the bid. We need peaceful payroll payers, painters and plumbers, divine diggers and  hopeful helpers. The Builders foundation is there, we are just adding some seismic retro fitting. We will be hiring until the fellowship, faith and fun have no where to go but UP!

See you from the rooftop, Kay Neal 224-8491

Women of UMW,

Come to your favorite circle meeting this month. Enjoy the fellowship and learn about the world.  See details in the directory.  Please note that the June Unit meeting has been changed to June 10th, 2010 at 10 am in the Kagawa Room at Church. Please come and hear about the UMW Assembly Aletha, Carlena, Barb and I attended.  The second annual "Honoring Your Mother Tea" was lovely. The afternoon was spent listening to Martha Monroe tell the history of the Wesleyean Teapot and how the innovative ideas that Josiah Wedgewood had, changed options for workers and changed attitudes to make this world a better place. We learned about the importance of buying fair trade tea, coffee, chocolate and sugar which allows the grower to get a decent wage for their product by eliminating the middle man when marketing and safeguarding their interests.  We sampled these items (except the coffee).  The hall was filled with warm, loving conversation. The generosity of the participants allowed us to donate to VOICES, Healthy Moms and Babies and UMCOR for (birthing kits).   THANK YOU to all who came and to Sarah Crosby Circle who hosted, truly LOVE in ACTION.

Mark your calendars....Next Unit Meeting:

Thursday, June 10, 2010 at 10 am.  The Program will be Call to Prayer and Self Denial and a report on the UMW Assembly called “Come Hear about Assembly”. The hosts will be the Lillian Wallace Circle.  Call Joan Feury for a ride. 287-2024.

Upcoming Calendar Dates:

Church Women United - Saturday, June 19, 2010 - Church Women United will meet at Melanie Oberting’s home from 10:00-2:00 pm.

GOD AND GAYS: SOME PERSPECTIVES

You might think you know where the Bible stands on the subject of homosexuality, but when was the last time you actually checked?

The spirited documentary Fish out of Water explores the seven Bible passages notoriously used to condemn homosexuality and justify marriage discrimination. With the help of a cartoon narrator, animated recollections of Bible passages and witty illustrations, Fish out of Water makes this polarizing subject accessible and non‐threatening.

After the fallout at Vanderbilt University when the film’s director came out to her sorority sisters, filmmaker Ky Dickens, crisscrosses America and listens to the country’s impassioned speech on this divisive issue. She speaks with ministers of all denominations, recording the experiences of the oppressed, the justifications of the oppressors and alternative perspectives of some Biblical scholars.

Sunday, June 13, 4:00-5:30 pm, First United Methodist Church, 625 Randolph Street

This film presentation sponsored by:

Covenant Presbyterian Church
