FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH OF NAPA

(707) 253-1411

June 15, 2010

Open Hearts, Open Minds, Open Doors:
the People of The United Methodist Church

from Doug’s Deck:

As most of you, no doubt, know by now, Roger is being appointed as the pastor of the 1st U.M.C. of Vallejo as of July 1st. As he has been so thankful to us for his time among us, I continue to be thankful for our friendship and the real warmth and sense of fun that Roger has brought to our church (Can I get an “Amen!”?). He will be missed.
And while no pastor is irreplaceable, our membership decline and resultant financial condition mean that there will no longer be two pastors serving the 1
st U.M.C. of Napa. I do look forward to being reappointed to serve among you, however, before I retire at this time next year. All of this has led to a very important question: “What should be my pastoral responsibilities in the months to come?” With your input, members of the Staff-Parish Relations Committee will be helping me answer that question.
It probably would be helpful for you all to know that Roger’s pastoral responsibilities have been:
Children & Youth ministries
Health & Welfare concerns
Membership Care
HOPE Center liaison
…while my primary pastoral responsibilities have been:
Nominations & Lay Leadership Development
Board of Trustees
Growth & Outreach
Missionary liaison
Church & Society

Both Roger and I have shared in our connections with the Church Council, Staff-Parish Relations, Stewardship & Finance, and Worship Committees.
While you may recognize that a lot more happens around here, others have either not needed direct monthly input from your pastors or simply have been functioning quite well without us! It’s been a gift to both Roger and me that we are blessed with such talented and committed lay leadership at this church.
So, where do we go from here? At least for a time you can help me begin to shape the near future of the 1st U.M.C. of Napa. I will be the principal preacher (with back up from Michael Herzog and others); I have a continuing commitment to Christian Education – for adults, youth and children – as well as for our Growth & Outreach and Membership Care. But how should that, as well as everything else, shape where I spend my time?
What do you think? I value your input and would like to hear from you all.

Meet Our New Members

Debbie Hurst: Debbie joins as a transfer from Wayside United Methodist Church in Vallejo. Her greatest joy, next to family, is her love of animals, dogs in particular. She has three Golden Retrievers. Debbie works for Kaiser in Vallejo in the Industrial Medicine Department.

Ron Hurst: Husband of Debbie, Ron joins us on Profession of Faith. He was baptized in a Methodist Church when he was a child living in La Mesa. Ron is a musician and a photographer. His family calls him “Uncle Cheese”. He works in the cyber security field as a contractor for PG&E.

Daunna Harris: Daunna (pronounced Donna) works in Sonoma as a nurse/office manager for a urologist. Her favorite things to do are crossword puzzles, reading and gardening. She transfers from Wayside in Vallejo. She wanted to join FUMC Napa because the people here are friendly, approachable, open to change, concerned for the rights of others and very warm. “Napa FUMC really does feel like home!”

Kathy Kopecko: Kathy was raised in a Roman Catholic environment. “I can no longer stay in a church that condemns gay people, like me. I have always been searching for an accepting church family that was very real and genuine in their expression of God’s love towards one another. I have found that here with all of you. I wish to be an Associate Member of this church until the UMC Book of Discipline recognizes that every human being is made in the image and likeness of God.

Hanny Coppenrath: Hanny was born in Djakarta, Indonesia. When she was little her parents moved to Holland until her early teen years when they moved to Napa. “I have always been looking for a church that could offer me a home where I would feel in tune with a church community that was loving, kind and supportive. That is what I’ve found at FUMC, Napa.”

Daniel Santellan: Daniel was married to Beth Krumenacker, who has been a member for about two years, in this church last September. One of the things that impressed him about our church is how we embrace diversity. He will join us on Profession of Faith.

Amen
From Your Prayer Group

We are all accustomed to hearing the word “Amen” at the close of prayer. It seems tacked on almost as an afterthought, as a sign the prayer is over, time to raise your head and open your eyes. But the Amen was not traditionally spoken by the priest or rabbi; rather, it was a response spoken by the people in affirmation of the prayer that had been offered. It was an assent, an agreement among those present that what had been spoken was honorable and true.

When we say Amen, we declare the power and sacred intention of the prayer in our hearts. We acknowledge everything—our dependence upon a loving God, our yearning to feel welcome in the household of heaven, our need for daily bread, our willingness to forgive, our thirst for courage and wisdom and safety, and our willingness to be led wherever we need to go.

When we say Amen, we are saying, Mother/Father God, we have spoken the truth of our deepest heart. We have come for food and guidance, and we have submitted our heart’s desire to your loving will for ourselves and for the healing of the world. Merciful Spirit, loving Creator, beloved God, we are yours, now and always. Hear our prayer.

And then let us say, with our words, with our hearts, indeed, with our very lives:

Amen

Dear United Methodist Women,

The Unit Meeting found the attendees of the Assembly from St. Louis in clothes from other lands (a sari from India, a muumuu from Hawaii, a colorful dress from Africa and a suit from Pakistan.) We presented an overview of the many exciting things we heard and saw at the conference in a “station” rotation style of presentation. A good time was had by all. The singing helped us stay focused on the theme of “Faith, Hope and Love in Action”. Barb and I want to thank you for supporting our attending the assembly this year. It was a wonderful experience.

Sonoma UMW hosted a lovely luncheon to which eleven of our unit attended last week. The children who sang from their preschool were wonderful. The song theme was fun, entertaining and helped us look at our personal response to mission.

Executive Meeting July 1st 9:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. in the Kagawa Room at the church.

Upcoming circle meetings are open to all. Please bring a friend or acquaintance.

Patricia Riddell - Thursday, July 8th 10:00 a.m. Kagawa Room

Judith Newton - July 8th, 1:00 p.m. at a Members’ home. Call Ann Thieme for details.

Lillian Wallace - July 8th 1:30 p.m. at a Members’ home. Call Eleanor Greig for details.

Sarah Crosby - Saturday, July 10th 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. Janeen Breyman will present the program and April Dawson, will be the Hostess

Susanna Wesley - Tuesday, July13th 6:30 p.m. potluck at Barb Thompson’s home, beverages provided

Hope to see you at one or more of these events. Fellowship is also love in action…each group think of how your circle will engage in mission this year. What do you want your focus to be?

Sunday Vacation Bible School
July 11 thru Aug. 8
11:00 am—Kagawa Room

The focus of Bible School this summer is all “green”. We will learn more about our world and how to be good stewards of the gifts God has given us. We will grow things as well as grow our knowledge. Everyone is welcome! Bring a friend!

In designating the
2010 Conference Offering
for the Gilead Center for Children and the
Ethelou D. Talbert Shelter for Girls
we affirm our commitment to
CO-CREATE, INITIATE and RADIATE
love for Jesus Christ and our neighbors.

Twelve years ago the California-Nevada Annual Conference honored Bishop Melvin G. Talbert’s wife, Ethelou, with a conference offering dedicated to establishing the “Ethelou D. Talbert Shelter for Girls”. Bishop Brown was then Chair of the Board of Missions and represented the Conference at the dedication of the shelter.

In 2001, UM social development institution Kapatiran-Kaunlaran Foundation, Inc. built the Center for Children and Youth Welfare (Gilead Center) in the countryside and moved the Ethelou D. Talbert Shelter for Girls from Manila to the new location.

The Center’s mission is to:
1. provide education, food and clothing to children suffering from the devastating effects of poverty
2. serve the poor in a caring and liberating way
3. journey with the poor in building a new heaven and a new earth

Currently the program is housing and serving 32 children at a cost of $707 per child, per year. Our goal is to raise enough funds with our offerings to provide 50% of that cost.

Doug and Martha Monroe have moved into their new home and have been busy, busy, busy. Their new address is 1033 Olympic Drive, Rio Vista, CA 94571. Their new home phone number is 707-374-5993. You may also reach them by email at dmmonroe@frontier.com. We wish them a home filled with love, family, good health and hospitality!

Roger and Veronica Kimble welcomed their new grandson, Jovani Marcus Preston, on May 28th. He weighed 7 lbs., 14 oz. and was 22 inches long.

His big brother is excited to be able to help. Best wishes to the family.

UMW Mission Event - July 23-25, 2010 - UMW Mission Event in Reno, Nevada.
One of the programs will be about Sudan.

UMW Mission Event - August 6-8, 2010 - UMW Mission Event at UOP in Stockton, California( same programs as Reno).

Please consider going to the Mission Events. More details to follow.

Attention All After Church Cookie Munchers

Our kitchen helpers have done a great job keeping up with the demand for treats for our chats after the Sunday service, however, there are always concerns that we will not have enough—it’s pretty hard to cut a cookie in half—and it’s a waste of crumbs!

So, even if you don’t or haven’t signed up on the cookie list, please pick up an extra package of cookies when you’re shopping and bring it in to the kitchen. Your thoughtfulness is greatly appreciated!

Fun and Fellowship would like to thank all who participated in the Finger Food Brunch.  A lovely time was had by all.  Fun and Fellowship likes to provide events where we can all enjoy each other’s company!

Look for our next events:  Fun and Fellowship Pancake Breakfast, July 11, 2010 before the service, @ 8:30 a.m. in the Kagawa Room. We will enjoy fellowship before worshipping together! We will be serving: Pancakes, syrup, fruit, juice, and drinks. The cost will be $3 per person, $10 per family (to defray our cost). Church Picnic, August 22nd, 2010 after the church service - For the first time, we are planning on having the picnic in the church parking lot and adjacent park area.  For this, we are asking if anyone has a pop up awning that we can use for the day. We will need a few of them. We will also be needing help with set up and break down.  Please contact Patty Renfrow at 252-4763 if you can help us with these things. More details to come! We hope to see you there!!!

SENIOR–VOLUNTEER CONNECTION. In as little as one hour a week you can make a difference in the life of a senior citizen. We are in need of volunteers to visit seniors, transport seniors to medical appointments, and also people who are able to install grab bars, or build small wheelchair ramps, or complete minor home repairs which supports senior citizens to maintain an independent life style.

If you would like to volunteer or know of a senior that needs these services, please contact Mercedes King at the Napa Volunteer Center—707-252-6222

Here is my new email address as of July 1, 2010.
